Queerfit is now Open for Awesome

This is the time of year we tend to slide into inactivity. It starts to get dark earlier, the Halloween candy goes on sale, you “accidentally” double the recipe for Thanksgiving stuffing, and before you know it, you’re at the bottom of the pit of gloom and despair, sucking down another bag of Hershey’s miniatures.

Do something different this year. Start now.

Slap your hands against your knees and say, “I’m the bomb diggity bomb and in the next three months I’m going to get bomber and more diggity every single friggin’ day!”

Did you do it?

Alrighty then. To help you out, queerfit is switching to an open format from October 1 through the end of the year. That means there is no need to apply for membership to join us at our Tuesday and Saturday workouts for the next 3 months. Old-timers, newcomers, friends, wannabes…come on out. Tuesday at 6:15 and Saturdays at 10:00, we are at Brownwood Park just south of East Atlanta Village. As always, be mindful that we are a space for people of color and allies. We especially encourage participation from people of color who are trans*, LBG, and/or fighting the criminalization of our communities. You do not have to identify as queer to come to queerfit; you just have to be OK with coming to something called queerfit. If you’re a white ally who is stressed out about whether this is the right space for you, thanks for being stressed out about it. Also starting tomorrow, the daily challenges are back. If you’re going to get bomber and more diggity by the day, these are the daily challenges that keep you moving ever upwards towards awesome. Glo will be programming and Shae will be posting them to the Queerfit ATL facebook page.  This means the daily challenge will not be coming to your email – you will need to become a member of the FB group to see the daily challenges. The way FB now manipulates your newsfeed, the daily post will not necessarily pop up on your feed. You can jigger this by making the group a favorite, or you can just know to check the page.

For the October daily challenges, it’s all about Push-ups and Greens. Yes, THERE WILL BE POINTS. One point for doing the daily challenge, one point for eating a serving of leafy greens, three points for coming to a Tuesday or Saturday workout. More points at Glo’s discretion. You drop a comment in the FB post to get your points. And THERE WILL BE A PRIZE. The prize for the October push-up + greens challenge is a $30 Charis Books gift certificate.

See you out at Brownwood. Thanks to your generosity during the rep-a-thon, we will soon be adding hack bars, more bumper plates, sleds, and other heavies to our toybox. I feel more diggity just thinking about it.

Rep-a-thon here we go

Expect meteorological perfection for tomorrow’s rep-a-thon. At 10:00, it’s going to be a sunny 72 degrees in Brownwood Park, where (among other feats of wonder) Lisa F will attempt a 300 pound deadlift and Shae will grind through 400+ burpees, squats and more.

Queerfit 92ers and wanna-be/used-to-be queerfitters are especially encouraged to come out tomorrow. It is 100% OK for you to do a few squats and sit out the rest of the workout if you’re just checking us out or getting back into the swing of things. If you want, you can kick back and sip your coffee, nibbling your cinnamon bun while we suffer. You are also welcome, of course, to join us through some or all of the brutal fun.

Yes, there will be a regular workout on top of the rep-a-thon.

We’re closing in on $2000, all of which we will use to buy more bumper plates, sleds, and other heavy toys to lift, drag, throw, climb, swing, jump, and slam. For every dollar you put in, you can assign a rep of anything to either the group as a whole or to a particular individual. You can buy your reps tomorrow in person, or do it online now. Here’s what been ordered up so far:

Divided among everyone:

160 burpees
130 push-ups
10 queermakers
20 deep breaths
475 unspecified reps

Summer ends in 15 minutes. That’s when we will hit today’s high of 94 degrees, after which we are done with the 90’s until next June.

Goodbye, summer. Good riddance. You kind of sucked this year.

Hello to something so much better: the halcyon days between Labor Day weekend and the end of Daylight Savings. I don’t actually know what halcyon means, but I’m pretty sure the next 56 days will be fabulously halcyon. How can it not? Everyone and their gay mama in town for Black Pride, House in the Park is spinning in Grant Park, steampunk goblins are on Peachtree Street, and Roxane Gay and Samuel Delaney are both in town for the book festival.

And, most important, you can queerfit again without drowning in the humidity.

Come on back, we miss you.

This Saturday is a fine time to dip you toe back in the queerfit magic. Bring your guests crashing on the couch for Black Pride. Bring yourself. We’ll see you at 10:00 at Brownwood Park. Out of shape is fine. Hungover is fine. YOU’RE fine. See you Saturday for the start of the halcyon days.

*** If you’ve not yet put in your pledge and request for reps for the Rep-a-thon, you have until Sept. 19 to click here to get it in. There’s a ton (literally) of bars, bumper plates, sleds, ropes, and other toys we want to load into the queerfit toy box. For every dollar you put in, you can call a rep.
